Do you feel guilty for not having yet reflected on 2024?
It’s easy to feel guilty for not having done it yet. In fact, that guilt can weigh us down, especially when everyone around us seems to be so productive, intentional, and clear on their goals.
But should reflection really come with a side of guilt? Everywhere you look, the world seems to be shouting at us to be better. Be your best version. Achieve more. Hustle harder. Reflect. Improve. Repeat.
In theory, it’s all well-meaning advice. Who doesn’t want to grow and evolve? But let’s be honest: it can also be exhausting.
When I designed my recent free workshop, I didn’t create it to add another voice to this relentless choir of “do more, be more.” I created it because I know how overwhelming it can feel to even start—especially when you’re already trying your best to keep up with the demands of life.
This workshop wasn’t about pushing people to overhaul their lives. It was about creating a space to pause, reflect, and refine—to take what’s already good and make it better in a way that feels sustainable and aligned.
What happens when you’re “already clear”?
At the start of the workshop, I asked my attendees a simple question:
“How clear are you right now about what you truly want in your life and career?”
The average answer? A solid 7.
At first, this threw me. My workshop was designed for people who might answer with a 5 or below—those who feel stuck, uncertain, or directionless. Would these women, already relatively clear about their goals, find value?
It would have been easy for them to think, “I’m already doing okay. I don’t really need this.”
But that’s not what happened.
Instead, they leaned in with open minds and curiosity, eager to explore where they could go from good to great.
Why curiosity is the secret ingredient
Curiosity is one of the core values that drives my work—and it’s something I admire deeply in my clients.
The women who attended the workshop didn’t show up because they were lost or aimless. They showed up because they wanted to see what else was possible.
They weren’t there to fix what was broken. They were there to uncover new insights, refine their perspective, and challenge themselves to go deeper.
This is what I love most about working with driven, self-aware women: they don’t settle for “good enough.” They approach growth with curiosity, not perfectionism.
From broad goals to vivid visions
Here’s what I learned during the workshop: even when you think you’re clear about your goals, there’s always another layer to explore.
Many of my attendees came in with macro-level clarity. They knew, for example:
- “I don’t feel good about my job, so I need to focus on finding a better one.”
- “I want to feel more balanced between my work and personal life.”
- “I want to prioritize my health more next year.”
These are great starting points, but they’re broad. They don’t spark the kind of excitement and emotional connection that turns a goal into a plan you can’t wait to act on.
What we did in the workshop was zoom in.
Through exercises like the Wheel of Life and the Future Vision Meditation, we moved from general aspirations to specific, emotionally charged visions.
Instead of just “find a better job,” it became:
- “I want to lead a team where I feel valued and respected.”
- “I want to transition into a career that aligns with my passion for sustainability.”
Instead of just “prioritize my health,” it became:
- “I want to wake up every morning with energy and confidence, fueled by consistent habits that support my well-being.”
When you connect your goals to a vivid, sensory-rich vision of the future, something shifts. Your goals stop feeling like a checklist and start feeling like a story you’re excited to live out.
The trap of always “Doing Better”
I know what you might be thinking: isn’t this just another way of saying “be better”?
Not quite.
The difference lies in the approach. The constant pressure to improve often feels like a demand: You’re not enough as you are, so you need to fix it.
But refining your vision isn’t about fixing yourself. It’s about aligning with what you already know deep down to be true. It’s about making small, meaningful adjustments that bring you closer to the life you want—not because you’re broken, but because you deserve to thrive.
Why this matters now
As we approach the end of the year, the world is full of messages telling you to reflect, set goals, and prepare for the next chapter.
But what if you’re tired? What if you’re overwhelmed? What if the thought of another round of “self-improvement” feels like too much?
That’s okay.
You don’t have to overhaul your entire life to make meaningful progress. Sometimes, all it takes is a small shift—a clearer vision, a specific goal, a single next step.
